Wall Art - Eat, Drink & Be Merry!

I think this is one of the most simple ways to add some interest to a blank wall.  I purchased some inexpensive 12-inch canvases, bought a half yard of two fabrics, got out my staple gun and voila!  I really like how it turned out.

I have another project planned using the same technique, but a little more complicated.  I'll share it soon, I hope!

The New Hook Shelf

I don't have a coat closet in my house, so I wanted hooks for guests to use, and a place to set purses and bags.  I already had an old pew from the church I attended while growing up.  I put my builder, Smith Building, to work and he created a beautiful piece for me.

I made the pillows using patterns from Embroidery Library. I also knitted the chunky afghan a couple of years ago when this house was only a dream.  It's been in my attic patiently waiting...

The little statue next to the "M" was the top on our wedding cake. The blocks are old ones from my childhood.

The photo is of my father-in-law when he was in the military.

This little spot is one of my favorite vingnettes in the house.

The Master Bedroom

I've done a couple of posts about things in my bedroom, but I wanted to do a post and show you the whole room.  Now, I don't have anything on the walls yet, but here's a look at it so far.

The rocking chair may look familiar from this post.

You've seen the cedar chest and jewelry armoire on a previous post too.

I made this bed scarf out of a whole piece of cloth, appliqued the monogram, and machine quilted it.

This is my beautiful whole cloth quilt that my 89-year-old mother hand quilted.  There are a lot of stitches! I think she used six spools of quilting thread.  She and I marked it together using some old quilting stencils from my mom and my grandma (and some new ones too.) I'm so pleased to have this "instant heirloom" in my home.

I did a separate post about this little chest that I use as a nightstand. This is a much better picture of the final product.

I love my chandelier! I have a smaller matching one in the master bath. Oh and, you may have noticed we don't have the trim on this window yet.

I wanted a tufted headboard. (I do a lot of reading in bed and wanted the padding.) I planned to make one myself but found a good deal that I couldn't pass up on this one at wayfair.com.

The Family Picture Wall

Today I'm featuring the wall I've done of family pictures (so far.) I'd still like to add more someday.

I was disappointed when I discovered our security guy had installed a motion sensor right in the middle of this wall! Time to get creative. So, if the key in this picture looks funny (there's a big shadow) it's because it is stuck to the motion sensor. And...the sensor still works through the hole in they key!

The Recipe Wall

I collected recipes from my mom that were hand written by her and my grandmas for a display in our dining room.

I put the recipes in floating frames, so you can actually take them off the wall to look at the back. There is an empty frame because I'm waiting for a recipe from my husband's side of the family.

My favorite is the recipe for a "coal plant" from one of my grandmas

They are also called "crystal gardens" and you can use other things besides coal.  Here's a link to How  to Grow a Crystal Garden if you are interested.

The centerpiece of the display is a machine embroidered square about cooking.  Here's a link to the Embroidery Library pattern.

The RED Powder Room

Yes, I painted the powder room a tomato red.  I read once that no matter who you have at your house, they  may  not see everything, but they will most likely see the powder room, so it should make a statement.  It's been red for several months, with nothing on the walls, and it's been interesting to see the reactions.  Most men don't like it, but most women do. (I know that's sexist, but honestly it is monstly true.)  I kept saying it will look a lot better when I cover the walls with photos with white frames.  And it does!

#millsnewhouse, powder room, photo collage, flower photos

I took all the photos we used, except for one, which my husband took.

I made the wall hanging many years ago.  It's called "bargello quilting" and is easier than it looks. I'm sure you can find some similar patterns if you search.

I think I would still like to add a few more pictures. I enjoy photographing nature around the house and on my travels, so I'll be trying to get some good ones.

Our Stairway and Vinly Lettering

I love how the stairway turned out.  The treads were hand made by a local carpenter to match our acacia floor.  The treads are a local walnut and match really well!

The railing was a difficult decision for me.  What color? Since I have two tables with black legs/pedestals, I went with black for the newel posts.  And all the trim in the house is white, so I used that for the spindles.  It's a nice accent without standing out too much.

All carpentry, as always, was done by my son.  Follow him at http://smithbuild.weebly.com and smithbuilding on Instagram and Facebook.

I added some vinly lettering as you go up the steps.  Purchased through amazon.com.  I love how it turned out!

You only see this if you come up from our unfinished basement or by coming in the back door.  So, not everyone will see it, but I know it's there, and I love it!

Our Beautiful Dining Room Table

My son created this beautiful table for our dining room.  It's exactly what I wanted.  More of a rustic top, square, seating for 8.  He designed the pedestal -- and it's gorgeous.

You can see many more beautiful things he has crafted on his website: http://smithbuild.weebly.com/
